Harvey and the Giant Bunny Man

Posted by SheSue on January 26, 2009 under Out and About Portland

bunny-manYou all probably know by now that I do love bunnies, so how could I resist a giant bunny man? The story behind this big bunny comes from Harvey, the owner of Harvey Marine in Aloha, Oregon. It seems that back in the 60′s a damaged statue of a Texaco gas station attendant was brought in Harvey’s shop for repair. When the gas station owner didn’t want to pay the high cost for repair he abandoned the statue.

Now shop owner Harvey was a big fan of the movie “Harvey”. The movie with Jimmy Stewart is about a 6-foot imaginary rabbit who keeps him out of trouble. Harvey the shop owner decided to put a rabbit head on the attendant statue in honor of the movie.

After some major cosmetic surgery, the 26 foot bunny man statue was erected in front of Harvey’s marine supply store. He became an instant hit. In fact he’s become so famous that he’s used as a landmark for giving directions. At the holidays, the bunny man is known to celebrate with a Halloween pumpkin, Christmas tree, Valentine heart, Thanksgiving turkey or an American flag in his giant hand.

It wasn’t a holiday when I went to visit Harvey, so he wasn’t holding anything. That’s okay, every day with a bunny is a holiday to me!

  2. As of 4/11/2009 he is in a Blazer’s jersey and holding a basketball. Tomorrow is Easter… I wonder if he’s going to change!!

Anyways, thanks for the backstory behind this bunny. I see him all the time.
