Oregon Coast, Barview Jetty

Posted by SheSue on March 4, 2009 under On the Road

ocean-2Back from my trip to the Oregon coast. I’ve been many, many times, but never get tired of it. My sister is renting a house in Rockaway Beach on the northern Oregon coast. This is in an area with 16 tiny towns within a span of jettyabout 45 miles. These towns range in population from 145 to 4,675. Each town has their unique features; Rockaway Beach is home to 7 miles of beach, widest variety of guest accommodations in the county, and a kite festival in May of each year.

Another of these towns in Barview, home to the Barview Jetty and campground where I spent a great many weekends camping many years ago. On my recent trip I returned to the jetty, not to camp, but to climb the jetty. It is known for excellent fishing, but I have always gone just to walk the jetty. When we arrived, the tide was high, so the waves were pretty crazy at the end of the jetty. I may be willing to do a lot of things, but getting soaked on a chilly day did not sound fun, so I only made it about half way out. Still got plenty wet!
seagulls-bath
seagull-sighnWhen we first drove down the road, we saw a large flock of seagulls circling. We wondered what was going on, figured somebody must be throwing bird crumbs. What was found in the parking lot was the biggest bird bath. Seagulls also had claim to all the signs, the one seems to be the guard of the no camping sign. Seagulls also guarded the jetty, parting way reluctantly as we approached. For more information about the northern Oregon coast, check out the Discovery pages of the Tillamook newspaper.

Finally, I couldn’t resist this sign. I mean, where would a vehicle go?

  1. Thanks for the tour of the coast. And that sign, stating the obvious, is wonderful!
