Health Benefits From Drinking Coffee

Posted by SheSue on February 26, 2009 under Reality Rants

I am not a coffee drinker. Can’t stand the taste. When I had my first real job (outside fast food and baby sitting), I decided that I needed to drink coffee like everybody else. I tried out those International flavored coffees. It lasted about 2 weeks before I gave up and have never had coffee since then.

Everything you read talks about how bad coffee is for you with all the caffeine, so it came as a surprise to read an article that talked about the health benefits of coffee. Coffee has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. It is believed to have been discovered by a goat herder in Ethiopia. The story goes that he observed his goats in a spirited mood after eating some berries off some shrubs. He tried the berries, like them and spread the word.

Today thousands of people enjoy their cup of “joe” in the morning even while rumors spread about how bad coffee is for you. In excessive amounts – meaning more than whatever an individual’s body can tolerate – coffee can cause nervousness, jitters, and rapid heartbeat. But studies now show that there are a lot of benefits to drinking coffee as well.

One such study showed that coffee may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. It was proven that people drinking 1-3 cups of coffee each day can reduce the risk of diabetes by several percentage points. 6 cups cut men’s risk by 54% and women’s risk by 30% over those who avoided coffee.

In a laboratory study, it was found that a group of compounds called quinines found in coffee increases insulin sensitivity. This sensitivity improves the body’s response to insulin. Coffee also contains large quantities of the antioxidants tocopherols and chlorogenic acid, as well as minerals such as magnesium. All of those components have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
Other studies showed the following results:
latte
* 80% lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease
* 25% lower risk of colon cancer
* 80% lower risk of liver cirrhosis
* 50% lower risk of gallstones

Another impressive study showed that a history of consuming caffeinated coffee appears to help preserve cognitive skills such as thinking, memory and comprehension — possibly because of long-term caffeine exposure.

Of course, too much caffeine can cause restlessness, anxiety, irritability, tremors, sleeplessness, headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms and abnormal heart rhythms. In some individuals, caffeine can increase blood pressure. Some people are extra sensitive to even slight amounts of caffeine.

Something to watch out for. Some studies have tried to prove that coffee can cause high cholesterol. But it was found that it is the coffee oils that are responsible in unfiltered or boiled coffee. So remember to filter your coffee.

Here’s the bad news. It’s not the coffee that causes the most health issues, it’s the dairy and sugar you add to it. So if you do drink coffee, try it black or at least cut back on the sugar. Sorry all you latte drinkers!

Can Your MP3 Player Make you go Deaf?

Posted by SheSue on February 21, 2009 under Reality Rants

How many times have your parents told you to turn down the music or you’ll go deaf. In fact, most people regularly experience levels of noise and music that, in time, leave them hard of hearing for life. It comes as no surprise that that noise is most commonly caused by recreational and work related activities.

There are 2 types of noise that can cause damage to the sensitive hair cells in the inner ear as well as to the hearing nerve. One is loud impulse noise like an explosion. The other is loud continuous noise like a jackhammer. All it takes to get to this point of damage is repeated doses of noise at levels between 90 and 140 decibels.
mp3
These decibel levels are pretty common.
1. Crowded bar = 110-120 decibels
2. Rock concert = 120-130 decibels
3. Jet taking off = 125 decibels
4. Heavy traffic = 85 decibels
5. Firecracker = 135 decibels
6. Snowmobile = 100 decibels
7. Lawnmower = 90 decibels

Today, the worst threat to your hearing is the MP3 player. The sound they produce can be up to 100 decibels. But what makes them a real hazard is the tiny ear piece you insert in your ear to listen to them. Compared to larger headphones that cover the entire ear, these tiny ear pieces increase the decibels by 9. That might not seem like much, but it can mean the difference between an alarm clock and a chain saw. Also, these tiny ear pieces are not as efficient at blocking background noise as the bigger ones, which creates more incentive to turn up the volume even more.

Can you hear me now? You may not be able to if you keep listening to your MP3 player!

Does Crossing Your Legs Cause Varicose Veins?

Posted by SheSue on February 16, 2009 under Healthy livin, Reality Rants

My mother was plagued with varicose veins. She took to wearing nurses panty hose (thick and girdle like) under all her clothes. She didn’t even go out on a hot day without those hose on. Did crossing her legs cause them?
stilettos
This myth was probably started to keep women from crossing their legs under the dinner table as it was considered bad manners. It was intensified in the 1990′s when a company that makes dietary supplements started a campaign, the “Great American Cross-out”. It drew a lot of attention causing a lot of women to believe that a life of leg crossing has caused their varicose veins. There was one problem, it wasn’t true.

Many studies have not found any evidence linking varicose veins to leg crossing. Varicose veins are caused by blood pooling in the legs. It has been found that women who wear stilettos, have a lack of exercise, high blood pressure or obesity are more likely to have varicose veins. Men who are smokers or have lack of exercise are more prone. Those whose job entails standing for long periods of time are also at risk.

The easiest way to determine your risk is to check your family history. It has been proven that 80% of people with varicose veins have at least one parent with them. So go ahead and cross your legs, but be wary of stilettos and get to the gym. For more information about varicose veins including causes, symptoms and treatments, check out Medicine Net.

Can Exercise Wear Out Your Heart?

Posted by SheSue on February 7, 2009 under Healthy livin, Reality Rants

We’ve all heard the stories of someone who was very fit, then dropped dead of heart failure while training for some big race. Or the young kid who drops dead of heart attack while playing soccer. Don’t let these stories scare you. Most seemingly well people who die suddenly during exercise had an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.

In reality, the benefits of exercise far outweigh the risks. We all know that strong muscles have many health benefits. Your heart is a muscle too. Regular aerobic exercise will only make your heart stronger and more efficient. In fact, exercise expands the blood vessels around the heart which can save your life if a blood clot finds one of your coronary arteries.

While you raise your heart rate during exercise, it lowers your resting pulse. A fit heart will actually beat fewer times during the average day. If you have heart disease, exercise is even more important. Just be sure to check with your doctor for limitations.

A sedentary lifestyle is much riskier. An out of shape heart can also get flabby. When fat gets into the heart muscle it can interfere with electrical impulses. This can cause interrupted heart beat and can lead to death.

So get out there and get that heart racing a little every day. How do you know when you’ve gone too far? A good gauge is to slow down when you can no longer maintain a conversation. Want to learn more about your heart, check out the American Heart Association. Live strong.

Can Hypnosis Help you Stop Smoking?

Posted by SheSue on January 28, 2009 under Reality Rants

I don’t smoke, but know many who do and always talk about quitting. There are a wide variety of methods to quit smoking. Herbal, gum, patch, drugs. How about Hypnosis? It can make you quack like a duck or hop on one foot, why not quit smoking. Unfortunately, studies show, not really.

Nicotine is one of the most notoriously addictive drugs in the world, right up there with alcohol, opium and cocaine. More than 75% of smokers who try to quit wind up relapsing. Many times over in fact.
cigarette
For reasons unknown, women seem to have a harder time than men. Scientists guess that the weight gain is the reason. Smoking is horrible for every part of your body except your metabolism. Smoking forces your body to expend extra energy trying to detoxify itself from the chemicals being inhaled. When you quit smoking, that unused energy turns to fat.

Two great resources for those of you determined to stop smoking. One put on the by the US government simple titled Smoke Free. This site offer information, tips and resources. The other site is from the American Cancer society. They go quite extensively into the who, what, where, when and why of smoking. It offers great sections on the benefits of quitting, why it’s so addictive, what it does to your body and tips for finding help. Check out this Guide to Quitting Smoking.

Don’t feel bad if you’re having trouble. Mark Twain said, “Quitting smoking is easy. I’ve done it a thousand times.” Even though hypnosis may not work, not finding a method to help you quit should not be an option. I applaud all efforts you take.

Where is the Safest Seat in a Plane?

Posted by SheSue on January 16, 2009 under Reality Rants

Reading about the US Airways crash today, I was reminded about the old wives tale that sitting in the back of the plane is safer. For the folks on flight A320, it didn’t matter as they all survived. Was it quick thinking on the pilot’s part, or did someone on the ground tell the pilot what to do or was it the water landing that brought down the plane with no serious casualties.

After extensive studies and research, there is no answer to the safest seat on a plane. The flight is US Airways this morning is thought to have been caused by the plane striking a flock of birds which caused the engines to lose power. The circumstances of a flight involved in a crash are so varied that no one answer can be singled out. Some people argue that the rear of the plane is safer because planes always crash nose first. Others argue that the wing portion is the safest because, from an engineering standpoint, the wing is more structurally stable.

Ask Todd Curtis, an aviation safety expert who keeps a detailed database of airline accidents and crashes at Air Safe. Here you will find answers to all sorts of grim (and not so grim) questions about flying. Ask Curtis where the safest seat on a plane is and he will tell you outside the plane. Or ask these kids, maybe they have the best idea.
kids-on-airplane
What can you do to improve your odds? Most accidents occur while a plane is either taking off or landing, so it’s best to fly nonstop. This will reduce your exposure to these accident-prone stages of flight. Also, as a rule, larger planes are safer than smaller ones. Partly because they are subject to stricter safety regulations, but also because they have more structure that can absorb energy during an impact.

If it makes you feel better, there are nearly 40 airlines in the US and Canada who have not had a fatal crash in over 35 years. Some of these are Aloha Airlines, American West, Hawaiin Airlines, Horizon, JetBlue, PanAm and Southwest.

The next time you fly, don’t worry about the safest seat in the plane, just relax and enjoy!
