Is it Bad to Eat at Night?

Posted by SheSue on May 16, 2009 under Healthy livin, Reality Rants

How many times have you heard that if you eat at night, you will put on more weight? We hear about how the metabolism slows so that you don’t burn as many calories. Some say that the calories you eat late at night turn to fat.

The simple truth is, no matter when you eat, the calories you take in must equal the calories you expand.

The reason this myth is so wide spread is because of how people eat late at night. Most of the time, you have not eaten much during the day, so by the time evening rolls around you are starving and reach for, you guessed it, high calorie foods like potato chips, cookies or fast food. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is, these foods are going to add on the pounds.

If you are watching your weight, it is more important to eat balanced meals several times per day. If you get the proper nutrients during the day, you will have no cravings at night or you will manage to control them.

No studies have been done on humans to prove this myth wrong. However, a study was done in Oregon on monkeys. Groups of monkeys were fed precise amounts of food at various times of the day. Those who ate mostly at night did not put on weight as long as their daily calories equaled the calories they were burning.

So go ahead and eat at night, just don’t overdo it.

Nintentinitis, is it an Epidemic?

Posted by SheSue on April 30, 2009 under Healthy livin, Reality Rants

I am not, nor have I ever been a fan of Nintendo or any computer gaming. It was not allowed in my home when my kids were growing up. Playing video or computer games does not create social situations. Instead gaming creates very lonely people who have no real-world experiences.

Now I have further proof that gaming is not good for anybody. It’s called Nintentinitis or Wiitis caused by repetitive stress injuries due to playing computer, video or Wii games. Okay there are few serious injuries, but physicians in sports medicine are seeing a rise in strains and swelling related to the use of these popular games.

These physicians claim that anytime there is a new fad, there’s always a bunch of specific orthopedic injuries associated with it. In the case of Wii, gamers complain of pain due to repetitive stress injuries or twists and strains from playing in a confined space. Due to the small space, gamers are not completing full motions on certain activities such as tennis or bowling. Players figure out that a full swing is not required to return a swing or bowl a strike. They concentrate the force of the swing in the muscles of the forearm creating tennis elbow.

If you must play these silly, waste of time games; give yourself plenty of room, play the game properly and take plenty of breaks. OR you could get out and have a social life!

Does Garlic Ward off Mosquitoes?

Posted by SheSue on April 22, 2009 under Reality Rants

I have always been one of those unfortunate ones who attracts mosquitoes. My mother always told me it was because I was so sweet! Hah! All I knew was that while others around me had a bite or two, I spent days scratching what seemed like hundreds of bites.
garlic
A couple of years ago I discovered garlic as a seasoning when I decided to cut down on salt. Now I love garlic and eat it just about every day. I hadn’t really thought about the old wives tale about garlic warding off mosquitoes until last summer. I was hiking around Crater Lake with my daughter. While she wound up with many bites including some huge ones, I was virtually bite free. Naturally I figured it was the garlic.

After doing some research, I question my decision. There have been lots of studies, but none were conclusive. It is known that mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide that we exhale, our body heat and the chemicals in sweat like lactic acid. Apparently some people just emit more of these odors than others.

You can lessen your body odors if you wear unscented deodorants, lotions and soaps. Most studies conclude that DEET is the most effective mosquito repellant, even in small amounts. These same studies also found that citronella only works for a few minutes.

I did find a field study conducted in India which used a preparation made of 1 percent garlic oil, petroleum jelly and beeswax that was rubbed on the arms and legs. This experiment was found to be effective in preventing mosquito bites for up to eight hours. It was suggested that the sulfur compounds from the garlic were present on the skin and breath which kept the mosquitoes away.

Me, I’m sticking to the garlic.

Have a Glass of Red Wine

Posted by SheSue on April 13, 2009 under Healthy livin, Reality Rants

I have not had a drink in about 30 years, but studies about the benefits of red wine are starting to change my mind. The one benefit that hits the spot for me is the stress reduction benefit. I am one of those who wears my stress on the inside. I have tried the tips of hitting pillows or screaming into a pillow. That just makes me more upset. So perhaps an occasional glass of red wine will help.
wine
What is it about red wine that holds all these health benefits? Let’s take a look at the different diseases:

Coronary Heart Disease
– is the number one killer in the United States. One of the most common causes is hardening of the arteries which decreases the body’s oxygen supply. This happens as a result of the build-up of lipoproteins (cholesterol) in the arterial walls resulting in the loss of elasticity. In red grape’s skin are flavonoids which help reduce bad cholesterol and build up good cholesterol.

Cancer
- Red wine contains antioxidant compounds that carry anti-cancer properties. Research shows that red wine helps reduce ovarian, prostate and lung cancers. Unfortunately, the studies also show that the wine increases breast, esophagus, colon and stomach cancers. In this case, the benefits are controversial.

Stress
– The simple relaxing effect of a glass of wine is shown to reduce stress. Stress is a factor in a wide variety of diseases and ailments.

Food Poisoning/Ulcers
– Alcohol’s ability to stimulate gastric acid secretions in the stomach creates an environment where germs and bacteria cannot survive. Studies have shown that during a salmonella outbreak, those who drank wine with their meal had fewer outbreaks of the disease.

Red wine has also been shown to help build stronger bones, help ward off colds and respiratory problems and protect against Alzheimer disease.

Of course, the most important advice for consuming the red wine is MODERATION. While there are many benefits of a few glasses a week of red wine, there are negative effects if you get carried away. Too many glasses can cause addiction, obesity, liver disease, high blood pressure and looking like a fool.

So grab a glass of red wine, but just one. What’s your favorite?

Fitness Reality Rant

Posted by SheSue on April 5, 2009 under Healthy livin, Reality Rants

Now that spring is finally peeking around the corner, many are anxious to get outside and rev up their fitness routine. There are a ton of fitness programs out there, in print, in class or on video or DVD. How many of you have tried a program only to quit a couple of weeks later. Over and over? The trick? Keep trying them until you find one you are ready to stick with. And get some variety. While I walk every day during lunch, my evening program changes daily. This variety allows muscles to heal in between workouts and keeps the program fresh. I alternate between weight training, pilates, aerobics and elliptical rider.
jog
Here are some myths to watch out for when you’re choosing your program.

Is it harder on your knees to run on the sidewalk then on the treadmill? Nope, doesn’t matter, both put stress on your knees. Instead, put some variety in your program. Try the elliptical rider, a stationery bike or aerobics. You’ll jog for many more years if you do.

Will doing crunches or working on an ab machine get rid of belly fat?
Nope, it will strengthen the muscles, but not get rid of fat. Instead follow a regular fitness program filled with both weights and cardio and watch your diet.

Do you keep burning calories after you finish an aerobic workout? Actually yes, but not as much as you might like to think. In fact, you will probably only burn about 20 extra calories.

swimDoes swimming help you lose weight? While swimming is a great workout for your entire body with little stress on your joints, you will not lose much weight unless you swim for hours every day. The water actually holds you up, so the workout isn’t as great as other exercises.

If you’re not sweating, you’re not working hard enough. Sweating is your body’s way of cooling off. If you are walking in the cold, you’re probably not sweating, but that doesn’t mean you’re not working hard.

Using a machine is better because it makes you do the exercise right. This is only true if the machine is adjusted for your height and weight. Always start with a trainer before you begin any fitness machine program.

My favorite: No pain, no gain. No, No, No! This is the best way to cause harm or injury. If it hurts to do a particular move, you’re probably doing it wrong. Or you have an injury that hasn’t healed and won’t until you take some time off of it.

When choosing a fitness program, be sure it includes some strength training. This builds your core muscles which will help your posture, make you less likely to get an injury, and improve your overall workout. Most important, get started.

Are You Smarter Than Your Older Sibling?

Posted by SheSue on March 26, 2009 under Reality Rants

Historically, studies have claimed that IQ lowers among siblings with decreasing age. According to the research, this was because of the increasing strain on parents’ time, energy and resources. Other studies claimed that because the firstborn was only around adults, they tended to mature faster.

However, more recent studies have proven these theories wrong. Instead, your intelligent relies more on your family environment and genetics. Some research says that only children tend to be more success oriented as they were raised in an adult environment. Children from larger families tend to be more successful in social situations.

Other studies have tried to prove characteristics of each birth order. The oldest children are seen as more ambitious and given more responsibility. However, when brothers or sisters are born, they feel vulnerable and uncertain in difficult situations. Middle children are thought to struggle with finding their place and gaining recognition. Finally, the youngest are thought to receive the most attention and misbehave if they feel ignored.

Unfortunately, for every study done, there are many factors that don’t add up. Instead, studies that are consistent involve family culture, family relationships and the age of the parents. So when you older sibling brags about getting an ‘A’ in a class, don’t fret, you have just as much chance to get the same grade.

For more information on the subject of birth order, check out this article from Little Tree.
