Scappoose Peace Candle

Posted by SheSue on February 14, 2009 under Out and About Portland

You’re driving down a country road outside Portland when you come upon a giant read candle. This is a 50 foot red candle. You must be in near the town of Scappoose, Oregon.

In 1971, this giant candle was built by a candle making factory. To advertise, the company poured 45,000 pounds of wax over an unused silo and inserted a giant wick. Using a specially made 60 foot long match, the town mayor and state governor lit the candle and dubbed it the Scappoose Peace Candle. It was dedicated in the name of world peace and was for a time listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest candle.

Now Oregon has lots of rain, so keeping the flame lit became impossible, so a gas flame was installed. When the gas bill soared, the flame was replaced for a neon flame. Today, the neon flame still glows. Some still consider it a reminder of our dreams of world peace. Others just think it’s a goofy advertising ploy.

Valentine’s Day of Proposals

Posted by SheSue on February 13, 2009 under Other Groovy Stuff

I’m trying to get in the mood for Valentine’s Day, but alas, I’m just not that much of a romantic. Instead of looking up goopy love stories or poems, I found some great and unique wedding proposals since Valentine’s is one of the most popular days to pop the question. Be sure to read the last one, my favorite. Maybe it’s because it belongs to my daughter and her then boyfriend.

ringThat day my fiancé decided to go to the museum. I found that weird usually he never wants to do things like that. So we got to the museum and we were looking at the things and so I see a shining object in a box so I went over to see, and in the glass box there was a little box just sitting there with a diamond ring and a piece of paper saying “I will love you forever if you just say yes. Taylor will you marry me?”
I was so surprised I did not know what to say but my heart did everybody around us where staring so I with a great big smile whispered in his ear, “Of course I’ll marry you!!!”

At Disney World, in Victoria & Albert’s. The waiter brought a vase of a dozen red roses to our table and then presented me with a covered silver tray. When the cover was removed, a glass slipper containing a ring was revealed. The glass slipper was engraved: “Will You Marry Me?” and surrounded by rose petals. My husband got down on his knee, professed his love for me, and asked me to marry him.

beachI produced this animation as a way of proposing to my girlfriend (now wife), Natasha, who I had been dating for some time. I assembled a team of 20 animators to assist me, including co-workers, as well as students from my 3D character animation class at the Art Institute of California-San Francisco. We created more than four minutes of animation in just three months.
When it was completed, I surprised Natasha by bringing her to the Parkway Movie Theater in Oakland, where they played the animation on the big screen in front of over 100 of our friends and family. The entire event was filmed for the TLC television show “A Perfect Proposal.”

I had an acquaintance (whom Pam did not know) show up ahead of us to play Putt Putt, and then on the 18th hole, the ring was in the hole waiting for her. I had to intentionally 5-putt to make sure Pam got there first. We had pictures taken in action by the friends, and she was very surprised.

candyWhen I came home, my boyfriend said he had a gift for me for Christmas and was unsure if it was something I really wanted. I said okay, what is it? He said it’s in the bedroom. Okay, I thought. We talked into the bedroom. I was the first one in the room. It was lit up in candle light and roses were on the bed spelling out “will you marry me?” I turned around and he was on one knee with the ring in his hand.

******************************************************************

Sunday morning it had been snowing all night long. I woke up to a world covered with snow. When I got out of bed and went to the window, stretching. I realized that I was looking at snow piled up high to make a huge statue shaped as a diamond ring. Then I looked around and saw the rest of the design; letters made from snow to read “Will you marry me?” I ran downstairs to find my boyfriend standing in the living room holding a beautiful diamond ring, this one was real. I said YES, we hugged and kissed.

My favorite proposal story belongs to my son-in-law. My daughter loves the beach and wanted to get married there. One weekend my son-in-law, my daughter and some friends went to the beach for the weekend. While the girls were setting up camp, the guys went to ‘find firewood’. They took a long time and my daughter began to worry. Pretty soon, her boyfriend came running up to her and told her she “had to see something”. He took her hand and they ran a little way down the beach. There on the beach spelled out in flames were the words, “Will you Marry me?” He had soaked rags in gas, lined them up to spell the words and lit the whole thing on fire. He got down on the knee and held out a box with a ring in it. When my daughter said yes, he jumped up and told her he had to go put the fire out.

Beat the Economic Stock Fear

Posted by SheSue on February 9, 2009 under Other Groovy Stuff

dollarA year ago I finally qualified for my company 401k program. So what happens? The economy crashes. My latest statement showed that I had already lost nearly half that I have put in. On the bright side, I didn’t lose as much as those folks who have been in for years.

This is a confusing time for deciding how to invest your money, especially if you are considering the stock market. Some say the worst is yet to come, others say get in now and ride out the long-term gains. In September of last year, billionaire Warren Buffet was buying up shares of U.S. companies. In a New York Times article, he wrote “A simple rule dictates my buying: Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful”.

Does this mean you should go out and put all your money into the stock market? Slow down there nellie. Who knows when the recession will turn around, so for the short term, it’s best to keep some cash on hand. Experts say to have 3 years worth of living expenses in something safe like a money market that you have easy access to. As for what’s left over, the stock market will show the best gain over time. Your investments may start out by going even further down, but you have to stay in to win. Stocks grow faster than bonds, eventually.

Now is also the time to look at funds you already have. Experts say you want to maintain a portfolio that’s half stocks and half bonds. With the recent decline in stock values, your portfolio may be currently heavy on the bond side. Now is the time to buy cheap stocks to even things out. While bonds average a 3.2% return on your money, stocks will get you 7% in the long run.

You can be like my grandfather and hide your cash in your mattress. Or, you can be smart and put some of your money in stock funds. Don’t let fear beat you.

Obama, Toni Morrison and Race

Posted by SheSue on February 8, 2009 under Other Groovy Stuff

I have pondered for a time about Obama’s race speech. He doesn’t want to be thought of as the first black president, he wants to be known for doing a good job. He speaks of obliterating racism. He wants everyone to be just Americans. I agree that racism needs to be obliterated, but I don’t agree that we all need to be “just Americans”. I think that everyone of us is different and we should celebrate our differences.

Then I came across an interview with Toni Morrison, a Nobel laureate. Her views on racism I totally agree with. She talked about when people first came to the United States, most were servants, criminals or homeless. The new land had no laws, so they could kill anybody they want. It gave them superiority. And that is what race is born from.

She talks of a world where people stand up for their ethnicity without harboring any superiority. So yes, we are all Americans as Obama wants, but we also have an ethnic background we are proud of.

You are not born a racist. You are taught to be a racist. This is what has to stop. It is fine to feel superior, but only for your experience or education. That superiority should be used to educate others, not to hold court over them. It is all well and good that racism is taught as bad in school, but it needs to come from home first.

My rant is over. If you want to read this interview with Toni Morrison, check it out at AARP. Or you can check out Obama’s speech.

Can Exercise Wear Out Your Heart?

Posted by SheSue on February 7, 2009 under Healthy livin, Reality Rants

We’ve all heard the stories of someone who was very fit, then dropped dead of heart failure while training for some big race. Or the young kid who drops dead of heart attack while playing soccer. Don’t let these stories scare you. Most seemingly well people who die suddenly during exercise had an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.
heart
In reality, the benefits of exercise far outweigh the risks. We all know that strong muscles have many health benefits. Your heart is a muscle too. Regular aerobic exercise will only make your heart stronger and more efficient. In fact, exercise expands the blood vessels around the heart which can save your life if a blood clot finds one of your coronary arteries.

While you raise your heart rate during exercise, it lowers your resting pulse. A fit heart will actually beat fewer times during the average day. If you have heart disease, exercise is even more important. Just be sure to check with your doctor for limitations.

A sedentary lifestyle is much riskier. An out of shape heart can also get flabby. When fat gets into the heart muscle it can interfere with electrical impulses. This can cause interrupted heart beat and can lead to death.

So get out there and get that heart racing a little every day. How do you know when you’ve gone too far? A good gauge is to slow down when you can no longer maintain a conversation. Want to learn more about your heart, check out the American Heart Association. Live strong.
