Off to the Beach to see those Emotional Cats

Posted by SheSue on February 28, 2009 under On the Road, Other Groovy Stuff

Just wanted to update you on my cat sitting job before I head to the beach to visit with them at their home. Last week I was cat sitting my sister’s cats. I was trying to decide if cat’s get homesick. To all vets or scientists who believe that cats don’t have emotions, BAH! You should have seen those cats when my sister got home. Tansy, the fraidy cat, was all over her. She was running around the room, rubbing on her legs, playing with her toys, more rubbing on legs. That cat was definitely emotional!

I am off for a few days to enjoy some time at the beach. I hope to have lots of stories to share when I come back. I will leave you with an adorable kitty on video.

Live Green and Earn Some Green

We all know that the way we live has an effect on our environment called our carbon footprint. What we make in our homes, the way and how much we travel, the food we eat, and what we buy and throw away all contribute to our footprint. Use The Nature Conservancy’s calculator to measure your own carbon footprint. You will be asked questions like what kind of car you drive, how far you commute, what kind of light bulbs you use, whether you use energy efficient appliances, etc. This is the primary level of a carbon footprint, the use of energy you use for the above mentioned activities. I took the test and came up with an estimated greenhouse gas emissions of 23 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per year, which is below the U.S. national average of 27.

One of the things I scored somewhat high on was travel and I only commute about 50 miles per day. I do dream of being able to work from home some day which would limit my commuting time. I would also have more time to grow my own food and reduce my clothing purchases. I found a website that offers some home business ideas that are Green Home Businesses. A cool green home based business that you might want to start is selling air purifiers. EcoQuest products help in getting rid of harmful elements in the air we breathe. Health Benefits From Drinking Coffee

Posted by SheSue on February 26, 2009 under Reality Rants

I am not a coffee drinker. Can’t stand the taste. When I had my first real job (outside fast food and baby sitting), I decided that I needed to drink coffee like everybody else. I tried out those International flavored coffees. It lasted about 2 weeks before I gave up and have never had coffee since then.
coffee
Everything you read talks about how bad coffee is for you with all the caffeine, so it came as a surprise to read an article that talked about the health benefits of coffee. Coffee has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. It is believed to have been discovered by a goat herder in Ethiopia. The story goes that he observed his goats in a spirited mood after eating some berries off some shrubs. He tried the berries, like them and spread the word.

Today thousands of people enjoy their cup of “joe” in the morning even while rumors spread about how bad coffee is for you. In excessive amounts – meaning more than whatever an individual’s body can tolerate – coffee can cause nervousness, jitters, and rapid heartbeat. But studies now show that there are a lot of benefits to drinking coffee as well.

One such study showed that coffee may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. It was proven that people drinking 1-3 cups of coffee each day can reduce the risk of diabetes by several percentage points. 6 cups cut men’s risk by 54% and women’s risk by 30% over those who avoided coffee.

In a laboratory study, it was found that a group of compounds called quinines found in coffee increases insulin sensitivity. This sensitivity improves the body’s response to insulin. Coffee also contains large quantities of the antioxidants tocopherols and chlorogenic acid, as well as minerals such as magnesium. All of those components have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
Other studies showed the following results:
latte
* 80% lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease
* 25% lower risk of colon cancer
* 80% lower risk of liver cirrhosis
* 50% lower risk of gallstones

Another impressive study showed that a history of consuming caffeinated coffee appears to help preserve cognitive skills such as thinking, memory and comprehension — possibly because of long-term caffeine exposure.

Of course, too much caffeine can cause restlessness, anxiety, irritability, tremors, sleeplessness, headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms and abnormal heart rhythms. In some individuals, caffeine can increase blood pressure. Some people are extra sensitive to even slight amounts of caffeine.

Something to watch out for. Some studies have tried to prove that coffee can cause high cholesterol. But it was found that it is the coffee oils that are responsible in unfiltered or boiled coffee. So remember to filter your coffee.

Here’s the bad news. It’s not the coffee that causes the most health issues, it’s the dairy and sugar you add to it. So if you do drink coffee, try it black or at least cut back on the sugar. Sorry all you latte drinkers!

Do Cats Get Homesick?

Posted by SheSue on February 25, 2009 under Other Groovy Stuff

I have been cat sitting for my sister. She has three little ladies who are all very different. My sister has raised a number of cats, all named after herbs and rosiespices. This first puffball is Rosie, short for Rosemary. Rosie has a beautiful coat, a tiny face, short legs and tail and a shapely (?) body. She is the outgoing cat, ever curious.

Next is Tansy, an herb. She is the fraidy cat. Afraid of everything and everybody. Since coming to stay, it took her 2 days before she would come out from under the tansycovers to check me out. Then a big gust of wind rattled the windows and she raced back for cover.

Finally we have Cori, short for coriander. She is the old woman of the three, 16 years old. Once again a beautiful coat, Cori is the standoffish cat. She will come out and sit and stare at me, but not make any moves towards me. I can get her to check coriout what I have in my hand if I approach her, but she doesn’t make attempts to come see.

So I had to wonder if cats get homesick. Are they pining for my sister? I checked out a few places on line but can find nothing. I did find very different opinions on whether a cat cries. Many people said yes, but the vets say no. The vets insist that cats don’t have emotions like humans do. After raising a daughter who once wanted to be a biologist, I have to disagree with that.

I have toys for the cats, supposedly some of their favorites, but they don’t play with them. Perhaps they do when I’m at work. They do seem to be eating and doing their thing. I’ve never had cats because my husband thinks he is allergic to them, so I don’t know what to expect. I guess I shouldn’t be that worried, but I am. They are my sister’s only family.

Two more days, kitties, then you’re mama will be home. Do any of you know if cats get homesick?

You Cancer, I Have Cancer, We All Have Cancer

Posted by SheSue on February 24, 2009 under Healthy livin

I can only imagine that the scariest moment in life would be to be informed that I had cancer. So when I read an article in a magazine that said we all have cancer cells in us, it got my attention. A sigh of relief came when I read that our bodies also have natural defenses that usually prevent the cancer cells from becoming a disease.

There are three main defenses: our immune system, control of inflammation and nutrients that reduce the growth of blood vessels which are needed by tumors. So if Aunt Mary had cancer, does that mean you won’t get it? Maybe, but studies have shown that genetics only contribute to 15% of risk, the other 85% is determined by our lifestyle choices.

In the past couple of decades, Americans are showing a breakdown of these defenses. For most of us, it’s a simple matter of choosing to live more healthy. Most of you know that exercise is good for you and a healthy diet. There are some other simple habits that help defeat cancer.

yoga-catCut out the Sugar – Cancer thrives on sugar which causes inflammation. Try to avoid refined sugar including soda, ketchup and white flour which quickly turns into sugar.

Walk out the Cancer – 30 minutes a day of any exercise can dramatically reduce the risk of cancer. I am a walking fool, once you start, it becomes addictive. Be sure to choose a form of exercise that you will stick to.

Ommm… – Stress causes inflammation and weakens your immune system. It’s so easy to say get rid of the stress. It’s more practical to learn out to respond to stress differently. Yoga, qigong or meditation can reduce your stress and strengthen our resistance to the cancer.

Toxins in the House – You don’t have to live in a vacuum seal, but you can minimize the toxins in your house. Watch for the following:
1. cosmetics
2. Teflon pans
3. dry cleaning
4. water heated in hard plastic

Foods that Fight Back – While you get rid of sugar, be sure to eat plenty of the following foods that help fight cancer:
1. Herbs and spices including thyme, rosemary, mint, basil, sage, turmeric, ginger
2. Omega 3 fatty acid rich food including salmon, sardines, mackerel, walnuts, green vegetables
3. Vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage
4. Garlic, onions, leeks
5. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries
6. Dark chocolate
7. Green tea, pomegranate juice, red wine (in moderation)

Most people who take on these lifestyle changes will notice a difference in a couple of weeks. You will have more energy & drive; feel more at peace and be filled with a passion for life. For more information on cancer, check out the American Cancer Society.

Live long and prosper.

Yummy Brunch on the Portland Spirit

Posted by SheSue on February 23, 2009 under Out and About

spiritOne of the most popular cruises on the Portland Spirit is their Sunday Champagne Brunch. The Portland Spirit is a 3-deck 150 foot long yacht. It boards in downtown Portland, cruises on the Willamette River, then back to Portland. You get to see the core downtown area, then the rural countryside of the Willamette valley before turning around and heading back.
table
Here I am with my son on the right and my daughter and her husband on the left. The inside of the boat is set up just like a restaurant. Each party gets their own table. Your waiter serves up orange juice, fills your coffee cup and pours your choice of sparkling cider or champagne.
buffet
You are free to head up to the buffet anytime. The menu is pretty extensive. There are a variety of fresh breads and pastries followed by several cold salads. Next is breakfast with thick slices of french toast, scrambled eggs, country fried potatoes, pepper bacon and eggs benedict. Keep going for platters of fresh vegetables and fruits and finally an assortment of cheeses and crackers. And while we are wading our way through all this food, a dessert tray is brought out. That will wait.
banks-of-willamette
While we are eating, the crew gets the boat ready to shove off. The captain gives a short introductory and safety speech. The wait staff sings a cute ditty and we are on our way. There is a grand piano on board providing live music for most of the cruise. About half way through the cruise, we are all invited to visit the captain on the bridge.
bow-of-boat
After filling our tummies, it’s time to explore. We head up to the top deck which is mostly open air. The day is pretty nice, so we check out the sights. Then it’s time to visit the captain. We all get a turn “driving” the boat. You get a special certificate for driving. I have been here before while visiting with Captain Kaya. The view up here is spectacular.

Don’t forget to check out the smallest floating gift shop west of the Mississippi. There is a pretty good selection for how small it is. By now we have worked up an appetite to sample the desserts. Cute little petite fours, a nutty chocolate roll filled with creme, cookies and lemon bars. Mmm, breaking your diet once in a while isn’t bad, is it.

As we head back into town, we once again wander the boat. The boat goes as far as the Steel bridge before turning once again and heading back to dock. The food was great, the company fabulous. If you’re looking for something to do for a special occasion, be sure to check out the Portland Spirit. Tell ‘em SheSue sent you!
